Where, how and what can we use graters for?

Many utensils are hidden gems in the cooking process, and the kitchen grater is at the top of the list. Be prepared to be surprised by what you can use grating tools for. We look at the different types of graters, how to use them, and what to use them for.

Different types of graters  

There are two main types and they both have their advantages:

 Hand grater:

A hand grater intended for the kitchen only works on one side. Nonetheless, it is a handy grater for kitchen tasks because you can grate with minimal effort. Often these will be paddle type devices with a rubberized base to prevent them from falling off. They are good for grating small cheeses, such as Parmesan, or even zesting fruit.

Box grater:

Mandoline: 

This tool is closer to a vegetable peeler than a kitchen grater. You use it to cut vegetables and fruits into thin slices, crinkled slices or matchsticks.

 Rotary

This may not look like a kitchen grater at first glance, but it makes your efforts easier. Put the cheese or ingredients in a round grater and turn the hand. It will automatically recycle and grind the ingredients.

 Spice: 

Some chefs use dedicated tools for grating spices. It is thinner and longer than a grater, which is designed for grinding things into small pieces.

 Using different graters

Although the basic features of a kitchen grater remain the same, there are different ways to use them. Before we look at what ingredients you can grate, we discuss how to use these tools. We start with box graters, arguably the easiest one to use.
